FIONNGHLAS
Colour, sound, looped video installation, 2 min 23 sec
VR presentation and single channel video : The MAC Belfast, 2022
Fionnghlas is an immersive installation exploring cold-water swimming, breath, anxiety and the body’s relationship with the sea.
Emerging during a period of heightened personal and collective anxiety, the work reflects on swimming as both endurance and refuge. Returning to the sea becomes a way of regulating the body and mind, while the surrounding sonic environment introduces traces of technological interference: wireless signals, telephone fragments and accidental anomalies.
Suspended between calm and tension, Fionnghlas explores how sensory experience can shift between therapeutic immersion and disorientation. Through moving image, lightbox, virtual reality and immersive sound, the work invites viewers to inhabit a space between effort and stillness, presence and drift.

Fionnghlas developed from research into sea swimming, breath, anxiety and embodied states of calm and disorientation.
The title refers to a greenish-blue or grey-green colour, connecting the work to the shifting surface of the sea and to states of uncertainty, immersion and transition.
